13 Reasons Why (book) review

Thirteen Reasons Why is a thoughtful almost adult drama.

Rating: 10/10

Hannah Baker is dead. So, Clay Jensen is shocked to find tapes delivered to him that contain Hannah's voice. Each tape is dedicated to one person who she says caused her to commit suicide. Over 24 hours Clay listens to each tape to hear Hannah's truth.

Thirteen Reasons Why is a thriller wrapped within a serious drama. It keeps you hooked while also bringing up your emotion, and it doesn't feel like the suicide is used a cheap plot point. That being said it is more suitable for adults.

In conclusion, 13 Reasons Why is a well-written and thrilling story fraught with emotion.

Warning: The Novel and the TV series are different. Watch the series with discretion.

For Parents:
Language: a couple uses of sh-t, hell, damn, bitch, and d-ck.
Sexual Content: There is talk of teenagers "getting laid", kissing, and groping each other. Hannah witnesses an unconscious girl being raped. Even though that incident isn't described its quite harrowing. Hannah is later raped herself, and it is fairly graphic. One of the characters on the tape is a "peeping tom" and the chapter is somewhat sexual. Hannah is often sexualized by her fellow peers due to rumors spread about her. (The Sexuality in this book would make it more suitable for older teens.)
Violence: Two different girls are raped. Someone is killed in a car crash. (The violence in this novel would make it more suitable for older teens.)
Drugs and Alcohol: Teens drink underage and in some cases get drunk. One such escapade results in a car crash.

OK for 15 and up

Note: The Netflix adaptation of the novel is TVMA and is different from the book. Please watch with discretion.
