OUR CHARACTERS
Francis- He is our leading protagonist. His wit and knowledge help him discover who the murderer is.
Gustav- Francis' overweight, dumb, but nice owner
Bluebeard- a beat up older cat who makes friends with Francis and helps him discover the murderer
Felicity- a blind female cat Francis meets and likes
Joker- a leader of a suicidal cat cult (this book is weird)
Pascal- A very old wise cat who uses a computer (yes he taught himself how to use it when he was bored.), to document the murders
Prof. Preterius- an evil man who experimented and brutally killed many cats trying to find the solution to a first aid tissue bonding glue. (it gets weirder)
Kong- a huge neighborhood bully
Hermann and Hermann- two cats who are Kong's helpers.
Let's get on to the rest of the review.
Language: three or four uses of f-ck (one sexually), several uses of sh-t, a--, basta-d, damn, piss, and hell.
Sexual content: Talk of cats that have been castrated. (not shown). Kong calls Bluebeard and Francis gay (they aren't). A reference to rape and masturbation (animals not humans, and they aren't doing it, Francis was just listing off some of the terrible things tortured animals do). Francis had a slight attraction to Felcity, and...
Francis and another mysterious cat mate.
Yeah, this book is strange. The scene was not described graphically or erotically at all. It was brief, in fact most of it consisted of Francis circling and meeting the newcomer. After the briefly described mating, they do mate again, but this time off book (off screen). For me this scene wasn't graphic because I don't really feel any attraction to cats, but I do feel that it was an unnecessary part of the book and it is still wrong. Most of the cats our protagonists find dead are sexually excited. (See other content) Francis thinks that the killer could be a "sex machine", but later finds that is not true and sex is not the cause of any of the cats deaths, but it is the motive. It is mentioned that Pascal's owner has two paintings one of a man's genitals and one of a woman's. Not graphic just mentioned. Hermann and Hermann are both castarated and one or two of the murder victims are as well.
Violent content: I think I'll just list the murders, since that's most of the real violence.
Victim #1: throat slashed
Victim #2: throat slashed, this time more openly
Victim #3: throat slashed until the body was barely connect to the head
Victim #4: throat slashed execution style
Victim #5: throat slashed, and this particular female was pregnant
The first couple murders aren't too graphic, in fact none of them are to graphic to read. The pregnant cat death was a little shocking though.
Cats fight on a couple of occasions. Dead cats are raised up on strings as their entrails fall out in a dream. Francis is swung around by a chain. Cats are experimented on in horrible ways and several jump into an electric shocker. One of the cat fights a cat dies. In another dream sequence a cat pulls little kittens one by one out of his torn throat and throws them against a garage wall. Slowly they pile up and blood is everywhere. This scene is one of the more disturbing parts of the book.
Drug and alcohol: Prof. Preterius drinks and sometimes gets drunk. Smoking is rarely mentioned.
Other content: Some of the dream scenes could be a little scary for younger readers, and certain cats are bred to kill all other cats to make a "master" race. (sound familiar?) Some of the imagery in this book can be frightening. Reference to suicide and genocide. Most of the cats are murdered because they bred with the "master" breed of cats. All of the actual murders are off book. None of the cats were killed by sex. The killer murdered them.
Rating: 15/16+
Probable MPAA Rating (based on book): R for bloody images, brief language, brief graphic nudity involving artwork, and animal violence and brief animal sexuality
NOTE: This book is also a film. I DO NOT recommend it for young children it contains most of the content in less graphic or more graphic forms from the book. The movie would probably be rated R or a harsh PG-13 even though it was animated.
Francis from the 1994 film Felidae
Okay, this book was very surprising and very well written. You think at the first few pages that its a funny little book about cats. Then you see the first murder and find out that this book is actually a murder mystery featuring cats. While the murders are not committed on screen (ahem, on book) the main characters still see many of the corpses. To make this review easier to understand let me tell you a bit about each of the characters.OUR CHARACTERS
