Nordguard: Across Thin Ice review

A beautifully drawn indie story featuring cute anthropomorphic animals.

Rating: 9/10

Across Thin Ice is the first in the graphic novel series Nordguard. It tells the story of Pi, a border collie, and her sled team. Pi's team is tasked with responding to a distress call from a Northern mine. The team (Nickel, Geri, Freki, and London) takes on a medic (Lt. James McKay) and a military officer (Oleg), and find out that they may have bitten off more than they can chew.

The art in this 80-page comic is incredible. The characters are well-drawn and all look unique. You attach to most of the characters instantly (Nick's my favorite). The backgrounds, especially the mountains are stunning. The writing is also well-done. Characters each have their own personality and nothing seems forced. The plot was good, but my only concern is whether or not a sequel is coming out soon.

Across Thin Ice was published in 2011.

For Parents:
Language: One or two uses each of hell, damn, bastard, and sh-t, brief name calling. (The Language in this novel would make it suitable for a teen audience)
Violence: Two characters are shot in the head (Blood shown), another is shot in his side and is possibly killed later. A corpse is seen. Characters punch each other on occasion. A crow is impaled through its throat. A couple of characters have wounds stitched up from fights. (The Violence in this novel would make it suitable for a teen audience.)
Drugs and Alcohol: Nickel sleeps off a hangover in the beginning of the novel. Oleg offers McKay alcohol, but he refuses.

OK for 13 and up
