Descent book Review

Descent looks like a horror novel on the outside, but it gives more thrills than chills. When Caitlin and her younger brother Sean go running out in Colorado they find both how beautiful the world can be and how cruel. Caitlin is kidnapped as her brother is left after getting injured. While Descent is much grittier than say, Room it doesn't describe the sexual violence that is supposedly taking place. The novel also features lots of smoking, for no reason at all.
Language: one use of c-nt, three or four uses of c-cks-cker and p-ssy, the f-word is said several times throughout the book along with sh-t, ass, damn, hell, and bitch. F-ck is sometimes used sexually. The derogatory term f-g is said once.
Sexual content: As I said previously in the review a young girl (18) is kidnapped and raped several times, the acts are never described save one brief scene referencing the man touching her breasts. On a complete separate occasion a man saves a teenage girl from being raped by a teenage boy. He nearly gets raped by the same boy before he is saved. This is by far the most graphic scene in the novel. A married couple have sex at the beginning of the novel, this is vaguely described, but is somewhat key to the plot. There are a few sexual references throughout.
Violence: Two men are shot. The second is shot twice and it is described in detail. A man is stabbed in the back of the neck with a knife. A woman is repeatedly raped, a man is almost raped by another man, and it is referenced that the kidnapper had killed the other two girls he had "taken" before Caitlin. Several people threaten each other with guns and knives. Two men fight a couple of times ending with broken bones. A woman cuts off her own foot, this is not described, but the aftermath and shock of it is VERY disturbing. A ran over dog is put out of its misery with a hammer.
Drug and alcohol: A lot of the characters smoke, so it is described several times throughout the book. There are a couple of drug references and references to people being drunks or having drinking problems. Characters do have alcohol on occasion.
