Carrie book review

This review is not for children

Recommended for people who liked: The Shining

Carrietta White has telekinetic powers. Her mother is a religious fanatic, and she just got her first period at sixteen. Carrietta's mother thinks that Carrie's menstrual cycle is a sign of the devil, a sign of lust for men. Carrie's mother locks her in a closet for hours telling her to pray. This is normal life for Carrie White.

This is Stephen King's first novel and it is a famous one. As prom week comes to a close there couldn't be a creepier book to read. Most people know of the famous scene towards the end of Carrie, and possibly a few others. The bullying going on in this novel is the main problem with it.

Suprisingly there is little language for a King novel.

Language: 15-20 F words, two uses of c-ck and one use of c-nt. There are several uses of sh-t, ass, b-tch,, hell, and damn. Also, there is name calling. Uses of the words whore and slut.

Sexual Content: The book begins with Carrie getting her first period. Its viewed as more horrifying than sexual. Femine products are thrown at her as she is naked. A couple teens have sex and a boy mentions that he had his condom on wrong. A teen is raped by her boyfriend, its non-graphic, but startlin. A few sexual references. Carrie's next door neighbor gives her teenage girl a bikini and Carrie sees the girl's breast for a few seconds as they slip out. Her mother gets very angry at this.

Violence: A girl is covered in pig blood. Two pigs are killed via hammers. A high population of a town is killed by fire or electrocution. A teen boy has his head broken by a bucket. A woman cuts herself with a knife. Carrie throws things around with her mind. She stops someone's heart. A couple of gas stations are blown up. A teenage girl is raped. A teen is stabbed in the shoulder with a kitchen knife. A woman is killed by being thrown against a wall. Rocks fall all over the ground, but they do not kill anyone.

Drug and Alcohol: Teens drink and smoke underage. A couple of characters smoke marijuana.

Other: The way Carrie's mother treats her is shocking. She punishes her child for having her menstrual cycle by locking her in a closet filled with religious imagery. Why punishment for some things Carrie did (like calling her mother the f word) seems natural, the way Carrie's mother punishes her is not right.
