The Revenant (book) review

The Revenant by Michael Punke is the basis for the film of the same name which was nominated for 13 Oscars. The novel is well-written and grim at times. I certainly enjoyed reading this thrilling novel. The descriptions here are incredible and the landscape portrayed in the book is amazing. I have no doubt why the film got nominated for so many awards.
Hugh Glass of The Rocky Mountain Fur Company is attacked by a sow grizzly bear, is robbed, and left to die by his companions. He survives and brutally gets toward his goal of revenge on his companions who left him out in the wilderness. This book takes place in the 1800s.
Language: A few uses of sh-t, b-tch, bastard, damn, hell, a--, and g-ddamn, several uses of whore and one use of "red n-gger" to describe an Indian
Sexual content: It is mentioned that a side character is always in the prostitutes tents. The Revenant is be riddled with mild to medium references including one conversation about sex, and an argument outside an Indian brothel. A couple references of people being naked to keep warm, but not sexually.
Violence: Several people are shot, somewhat graphically. A man has his head chopped off, another has his eye poked out by a swinging tree branch. A man is attacked by a bear and is mortally and graphically wounded. The wounds are later found to have maggots in them. There is a reference to scalping and a dog's head is crushed with the blunt end of a tomahawk. Otherwise, the descriptions of Hugh's wounds and his ordeal can be graphic at times. A man beats a 19-year-old repeatedly in the face and gut as a group of men watches. A man shoots another point blank in the shoulder and a young Indian boy stabs a man in the heart.
Drug and Alcohol: The men of RMFC talk about drinking. One New Years the group gets drunk. Men smoke pipes.
Other content: Somebody jokes about burying Hugh while drunk. A man is committed gambler. Some of the content of the book can be somewhat scary to young readers. Glass eats raw meat, eats intestines of animals, and eats the marrow out of an older animal carcass, some of it is disgusting.
