Pro-life vs. Pro-choice. I choose the first side. Mankind had a war just about this in this story, whether or not abortion was okay. So, they came to a conclusion. What if parents had the ability to "abort" their thirteen to seventeen year old. Let's say just for a minute, (this isn't part of the book), that a child had just been bad from the start, they steal, do drugs, maybe lay around. The parents have the option to unwind the child. A process in which the person is still technically alive even though they are pretty much harvested for their body parts as full organ donors. What the parents don't know or maybe they do is that they are pretty much killing their kid. What's so shocking is that the kid is old enough to know what's going on. Some of the kids find out about the unwinding before they are taken away. That's the other thing I have to mention, just like a real abortion once the parents sign the form the authorities come on the decided date and take the kids to a center. For a while the kids are just at the center they are treated very kindly. Eventually they are taken into the unwinding part of the center and killed.
THIS IS WHAT IS HAPPENING RIGHT NOW! Sure, teens aren't being killed, but babies are. There not being harvested, but still people are OPTIONALLY murdering children. In one day the amount of babies aborted would match the death toll of dropping a bomb on my hometown and killing everyone in it. Including the outlying country houses. Only these aren't adults who can protect themselves, these are innocent babies. Its a disgusting world we live in!
The book Unwind is written just as much for young adults as its written as a pro-life statement. Everyone matters.
Language: a few hells and damns
Sexual content: Kissing. A girl pretends to breastfeed a baby.
Violence: Teens evade capture and a few people are killed. Others are dispatched with a tranquilizer gun. Teens fight. A boy bombs a center, but in turn loses an arm. He horrifyingly wakes up to find that the he has a new arm and it was an arm of someone he knew. A lot of the book isn't violent its more disturbing.
Drug and alcohol: None
Other: The whole premise of this book is shocking. Teens steal, and it is mentioned that people can get injections to change things like hair and eye color easily. The unwinding process is described. While not graphic or or torcherous the victim is awake the whole time and is numb. This makes for a somewhat disgusting part of the book. Instead of feeling anything the person can hear the saws, they can feel a tugging as one part is taken off. It is HIGHLY disturbing. Also, babies can be left at the front door of someone's house. If the person who comes to the door sees no one in sight they have to take the baby in. Most of the book is very shocking. Some teens are chosen by their parents at birth to be a "tithe" for the church. The pastors approve most of the time. The writer of the book is not against any religion, in fact he may be a Christian, I will look into it.
Age Rating: 15+
While technically being a Young Adult book this book is not for all teens.
