Batman is retired. In fact he's been retired for a while now. Slowly Gotham fell into chaos, with no Batman to protect the citizens people are being murdered and assaulted left and right and on top of that a new gang of teenagers who call themselves the Mutants arise. They claim they will take over Gotham city. Commissioner Gordon is facing mandatory retirement about a week after the story begins. Joker is finally let out of a psycho ward only to kill hundreds of people. Two-face comes back claiming he'll be good, but he lies. As billionaire Bruce Wayne turns on his television, nothing is on, but the news. Murder, hostages, and rape, he decides to become Batman again, but this time he is darker. While he won't kill he will teach the criminals a lesson. Eventually once the citizens learn of his brutality and a new commissioner who wants him arrested pop up Superman is called and they have to fight in the battle that inspired the new Batman V. Superman movie.
Overall, this probably isn't the best comic book for kids. But, it is one of the most well-known Batman comics, ever created. Already a two-part animated movie has been released and it did very well too.
Language: Two uses of slang f-words (f u, f), a few uses of sh-t, a--, b-tch, b-stard, several uses of hell and damn. One use of whore. A couple uses of the slang "boner".
Sexual: References to rape and abductions. On a talk show a woman repeatedly says sex as a joke, (she has an accent so its spelled zex). Selina Kyle (Catwoman) is involved in an escort business, but that is never shown. Several scenes of near nudity on Bruce Wayne. Also, we see a silhouette of a hypnotized naked woman, (its just a shadow). A criminal grabs a woman, but she brushes them off and they leave her alone. People make a few suggestive comments. A criminal asks a prison guard if he has any kids. While not shown in the background of a couple of shots you can see a theater is called "xxx" or "nude woman". A man goes into a porn theater and shoots some of the audience. None of the footage is shown, you just see the guy arriving. One reference to a porn star being an actress in a children's movie. A robber is somewhat naked, but there are tattoos of swastikas over her breasts and butt and they cover up any sensitive parts.
Violence: Batman and co. pound their way through this book. Batman breaks a criminal's arm to scare him. Of course there are the standard fist fights, and there are the un-standard fist fights. A batarang goes through a criminal's eye. A criminal kills some of a TV audience, escapes and kills more people at a carnival, many of them are kids. They are poisoned with cotton candy, but we don't see much of the actual death just the bodies. Batman nearly breaks a criminals neck, but stops himself. Then the criminal pushes his head just enough so, his neck snaps. Batman breaks a criminal's nose and shoots at a huge gang with a tank using rubber bullets. Many references to murder in different ways. A child is held hostage. Batman and Superman fight. Batman holds a criminal over a high drop to interrogate him. A man falls off a roller coaster and lands on one of the lower tracks, we see part of him splatter for one comic book panel. Batman rides with many other people and attacks criminals. While he doesn't kill the criminals some of his accomplices do.
Drug and alcohol: References to drugs, we see people smoke including some main characters, and people drink.
Other: Some of what Batman does is brutal and wrong.
Age Rating: 16+
