This is my first movie review that reviews the content in movies as well as their acclaim and how interesting they are. Also, this is an early review since the film is released today.
I haven't reviewed the other 3 hunger games movies, but I will eventually.
When we last left off, Peeta was tied down in District 13 screaming. He had already strangled Katniss. Before that almost all the districts were taken in a heart-wrenching montage while the song "Hanging Tree" played in the background. Now, the actual war starts. Its very much like the book, but some of the deaths are just as disturbing as the first installment in the saga.
Overall the film had a good message that violence and revenge was wrong. Other than some emotional deaths and disturbing scenes there's not much in the way of sex or swearing, so this is a good movie for teens and it was marketed toward them.
Language: None
Sexual: A couple of kisses
Violence: People hide as guns are unloaded at them. A man gets blown up and we see him after word, you can briefly see that he has lost his legs. Another woman who was with him gets her leg cut and later is crushed in an explosion (not shown). People are shot including innocents. Parachutes are dropped just like in the Hunger Games while hundreds, perhaps thousands of people are standing in a square. They reach up to grab them to find that the parachutes are bombs. Also, that same crowd is shot into. In a very intense scene Katniss hears her name whispered eerily. Of course her and her companions are in a sewer. A few minutes later after a tense exploration scene very scary slimy creatures known as mutts attack them. They look like the pale man from Pan's Labyrinth and the alien from the Aliens franchise combined. Some of these mutts are shot, punched and stabbed. One is stabbed with a trident that opens when its all the way through. Also, a man is covered in oil, and another is killed by being strung up wires. Someone is poisoned. A man is disintegrated.
Drug and alcohol: People are given suicide pills. People drink champagne.
Conclusion: While having a couple of disturbing scenes Mockingjay brings a satisfying end to the Hunger games. It had interesting action and a good message that violence is wrong. But, because of the content I would say its okay fro 13 and up.
Rated PG-13 for intense sequences of action and violence and fro some thematic material
13 and up.
