I hadn't read anything by James Patterson until I read Zoo. This is not a review of the CBS series, which I started watching when I was about halfway through the book. Zoo is about how all the mammals in the world start viciously attacking humans all over the world. It follows the story of Jackson Oz, and several other characters including his wife Chloe. Most of the violence is minimal as well as sexuality.
Language: 15-20 F-words (most of them are in the second half of the book.), uses of S-it, SOB, b-tch, hell, damn, and a--, as well as b-stard, also there are uses of slang, such as crap and friking.
Sexual Content: Some mild references, as well as passionate kisses. One chapter ends with a girl suggesting to a man that they have sex after he buys her a $1 thong. The next chapter opens after the escapade, the only thing mentioned is that they are naked. A man and a woman get married after they find out the woman is pregnant. A minor character is a lesbian, but her partner died, so nothing goes on. Brief talk of animals mating, and its mentioned that Oz sees dogs copulating.
Violent content: It seems that a lot of the violence is in the second half of the book. More than 50 wolves eat a couple of unfortunate men down to the bone. A kid has to shoot a dog he's had since it was a puppy, A man is devoured by a number of creatures, described somewhat graphically. Dogs fight, a man's nose is bitten off, and several people are killed by lions. Animals threaten people and are shot. A bear tries to kill a man in a flipped car, several dogs are run over by SUVS. Other animals attack and kill.
Drug and Alcohol content: People sip on whiskey, wine, and beer. A couple of drug references.
Other content: Oz has a couple of dreams in which he and his family are attacked by animals, some of the animal killing may seem unnecessary. A soldier gives Chloe a gun for protection, but she thinks its also in case she decides to kill herself and her son. Chloe had a couple of mental breakdowns.
Rating: R for language, brief sexuality, disturbing images, violent content, and thematic elements.
Age rating: 14/15+
