Summary: If you're looking for an eerie mysterious book, Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children (let's just call it MPHPC), is the book you should read. It contains mystery and always leaves you guessing. Another positive element about it is that its not super graphic like most young adult novels.
When you pick the book up off the shelf it looks like a paranormal thriller. It is not. I thought that and almost didn't buy it. It would have ruined my reading list if I wouldn't have bought it.
Probably, the two most negative elements are the fact that Jacob lies to his father a lot once he finds the orphanage and the face that he likes his grandpa's girlfriend.
Woah! His Grandpa's girlfriend. Don't worry its a time travel story too. Jacob goes back in time. Its kind of hard to explain. But, he falls in love with her. Technically, and she knows it, Jacob's girlfriend is 80 something years old. She looks like she's in her teen years.
The writing and pictures in this book are amazing. A couple of the pictures are slightly scary, but not much. Riggs (the author) uses old black and white pictures he collected and wrote a story about a lot of them. Then he put all those characters together and this book along with its sequel were born!
This book is being made into a movie in 2016. Its being directed by Tim Burton so, that should give you an idea of what it will be like. It will most definitely be PG-13.
MPHPC will suck you in. I read it in a day. I stayed up till midnight just reading the book. You will be enveloped by the book.
Language: Uses of s--t, damn, hell, a--, and b---h.
Sex: As mentioned before Jacob is in love with his Grandpa's girlfriend. He considers it to be incest when he first falls in love. They kiss on a couple of occasions, some more passionately than others. Pornography is referenced mildly once. Birth control is mentioned. (It is shown among other pills in a pharmacy).
Violence: Jacob's grandpa shoots himself. The aftermath is shown. It is not incredibly graphic. Jacob sees monsters that are fairly creepy. They are rarely seen though so overall the book is more eerie than it is startling and scary. A bomb blows up a building. A kid is shot. (He doesn't die). A man is shot by Jacob and he dies. Jacob stabs one of the monsters, the monster dies. This scene is somewhat graphic but, isn't prolonged.
Drugs and Alcohol: Jacob's dad isn't usually a drunk but, he purposely gets drunk a few times. Instead of being crazy, Jacob's dad is either depressed or mean when he's drunk. But, it doesn't go so far as child abuse. Adults drink wine. Not to excess.
Other: Jacob's girlfriend Emma, as I said before is actually 80 something years old. Some people would think that relationship to be awkward. Jacob frequently lies to his father so he can go to the orphanage (the orphanage is actually Miss Peregrine's home for Peculiar children and Jacob goes back in time.). Jacob purposefully lazes off at his job since he knows he can't get fired.
