A monster calls book review

A Monster Calls is a sad fantasy story starring a tree.

Rating: 9/10

A Monster Calls tells the story of Connor O' Mally. The book mentions that his mother is sick right off the bat, and we see a young Connor struggling with the fact that his mother could die at anytime. Connor's father lives in the US, while Connor, his mother, and his grandmother live in the UK.

At 12:07 one night Connor wakes up to find a huge tree-like monster standing outside his window. The monster tells Connor that he has four stories to tell and that the fourth would be told by Connor himself.

A Monster Calls is a well-written and well-illustrated story of grief. There isn't much objectionable content, but it isn't the best book to read to kids, because it doesn't have the happiest of endings.

A film version was released in January 2017 and now is available on Blu-ray/DVD everywhere.

For Parents:
Language: a couple uses of hell
Sex: A reference to "making love"
Violence: Connor breaks several items in his grandmother's house. The Monster breaks a few buildings. One of the monster's stories deals with a character being murdered. A nightmare Connor has involves his mother falling into a pit. The monster eats a couple of people.
OK for 11 and up
